Did you know that June 8th is National Best Friends Day and June 13th is National Sewing Machine Day?
This magical time of year allows us to combine two of our favorite things in the world – friends and sewing!
Here’s 5 ways you can celebrate!
1. Make a Friendship Star Quilt
Historically, the Friendship Star was an important block for pioneer quilters. They were generally sewn as a piece of a quilt that would be gifted to someone important to them.
These were often given to a friend or loved one who was sick, getting married or preparing to move away.
These blocks often included stitched autographs that personalized their connection to the recipient. It’s a simple, yet elegant, block that displays the empathetic nature of quilters.
This tradition continues to this day and is a great way to show someone that you care!

2. Plan a Sewing Social & Make New Friends
Creating a sewing social event is a great way to meet up with friends and do what you love together. By sharing your experiences, you can learn about new patterns and local fabric shops. Your friends could even bring along someone you don’t know – which means you may even make a new friend or two!
For a “sew”-cial, you want to bring a couple unused patterns and fabric (at least ½ yard) to swap with your friends or new friends. How fun, right?
Spend your time talking about your current projects, local shops, tips, and tricks. If you’re hosting, you can set up snacks, ice breaker games for new people, decorate the swap table, and more!
It’s up to you!
3. Gift DIY Hot Pads Made from Upcycled Scrap Fabric
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a nice sewing project for a friend. In fact, you can create beautiful gifts just by upcycling!
Grab some old shirts, or other scrap fabric you have laying around, and quickly create hot pads perfect to gift your friend who loves to cook.
4. Make a Quilt Together
Instead of making a quilt for a friend’s life event, like with the Friendship Star quilt block, sit down, and create a quilt with a friend! What better way to celebrate your friends than to spend time with them?
If you use AccuQuilt’s fabric cutter, you can quickly cut your fabric – which means you can spend more time designing and sewing your quilts together.
Decide ahead of time what you want to use the quilt/project for. Here’s a few ideas to get you started:
- Create quilts for each other,
- Donate the quilts to someone in need,
- Make a baby quilt for someone you know, or
- Celebrate a mutual friend with a jointly made quilt.
There are endless ways you can put the quilts you and your friend(s) make to good use. Need ideas? AccuQuilt has hundreds of free patterns to choose from. Plus, use GO! Quilt to change the colorways!
5. Teach a Friend How to Sew
Maybe your friend doesn’t sew but has expressed interest in it. This is the perfect opportunity for you to teach your friend how to sew!
Imagine if they fall in love with the craft you already enjoy. The future could be filled with tons of fun! You might be able to host a sewing social with them in the future or make fabric projects with them in the future.
