8 Easy Tips for Makers Short on Time (+ 4 Fast Gift Ideas)

Dec 18, 2021 8:30:00 AM / by Cayden Crowise

These tips are for anyone out there who has holiday projects that need to be completed - and fast! If you need a good idea for a gift, check out the bottom of the post for four fast gift ideas! Let's GO!

1.   New Needles

Make sure you are changing out your sewing machine needles. An old, worn-out needle will cause you to have skipped stitches, bird’s nests, and broken thread. Save yourself time and hassle with a new needle.

2.   There’s No Such Thing as Perfect

Let’s be honest. Many of us get so caught up in making our projects perfect that we end up wasting time on little details. Or, worse yet, we end up paralyzed and don’t finish our project. This is particularly true for those who are new to crafts and sewing.

Don’t let this be you. Small mistakes aren’t the end of the world and, often, are not even noticeable to others. You don’t need to take your projects apart multiple times to be perfect. “Perfect” doesn’t exist.

Finishing your projects and learning is what’s important! So, don’t hold yourself back and have some fun!

3.   The Right Supplies

There’s no doubt that having the right tools for the job will help you get your projects done quickly. Things like quality thread, scissors, cutting mats, and fabric cutters are just a few.

Makers who want more time to do their craft love AccuQuilt fabric cutters because they are accurate, effortless, and help you cut 90% faster than scissors or rotary cutters. AccuQuilt offers makers the ultimate time-saving solution - whether it's to create more projects each year or to complete gifts fast!

4.   Sew with Wonder Clips

Do you find your sewing is getting slowed down because you’re avoiding injuries from straight pins? The answer is simple: Wonder Clips. Quality clips will hold things together for you and you won’t have to worry about getting any blood on your project. Be sure you use quality clips.

Using clips will also help you align your seams properly (and thus avoid needing to rip them out). That’s a time saver all in itself!

5.   Keep Your Scissors Close

How often have you started a project and realized that you need to leave your project to grab some scissors? It’s happened to me more than I’d care to admit. Make sure you have scissors at your workspace before you sit down to work on your project.

Don’t have a good pair of scissors to do your craft? Check out Karen Kay Buckley’s Perfect Scissors. These scissors are specially designed to prevent your fabric from fraying and can be sharpened. Perfect for left or righthanded individuals.

6.   Dedicated Space

If you can, set aside a space for you to do your craft. It is important to make it easy for you to be able to create whenever you have a moment - whether that is in a spare room or a chair in your living room. Keep the supplies you need organized and ready in your spot.

Convenience is key to a completed project!

7.   Give Yourself a Deadline – and Stick to It!

Some of us work best when we have a deadline. If you find that you often don’t complete your projects in time (say, for the holiday gifts), then this might be the solution for you!

Pro Tip:  Keep yourself accountable by telling others that you need to get things done by a certain date.

8.   Don’t Wish – Do!

I know how much fun it is to browse the internet to find new projects and inspiration, but the internet isn’t going to do your project for you. Don’t get caught up in Pinterest or a craft site.

Pro Tip:  I like to set aside some time to work on my projects every day, then reward myself with some time online after!
