AccuQuilt GO! Review: Melanie Call's Fabric-ing Time

May 10, 2019 8:14:20 AM / by Melanie Call

Today, meet one of our new GO! Getters, Melanie. After getting the chance to work with the AccuQuilt GO! fabric cutter, she learned just how easy it is to adapt our GO! Qube Mix & Match Block to her own patterns and projects. What unexpected ways are you using your AccuQuilt cutter and dies?

Hello AccuQuilt Friends! I’m Melanie Call and I’m so excited to be here on the AccuQuilt Blog! I’m married to my high school sweetheart and we have 3 amazing kids, plus I work as a pharmacist - total math and chemistry nerd here. Fabric has become my relaxing and creative outlet and I LOVE it! I’ve been sewing/quilting for about 14 years, but for the past 2 years, I have been sewing/quilting almost every day!

My kids call it “Mom’s fabric-ing time." I love sewing in the morning before the kids wake up - when it's peaceful and relaxing! It’s the perfect way to start my day! You know what has made my sewing/quilting time more relaxing: my new AccuQuilt GO! fabric cutter. Cutting out fabric for my projects is my least favorite part, but my AccuQuilt GO! has made it fun, easy, and quick! Plus, no more “oops” with the rotary blade. ;)

So, today I'll be sharing with you my first thoughts on the AccuQuilt Ready. Set. GO! Ultimate Fabric Cutting System... hint ... I LOVE it!

I received my fabric cutting system in early April and I can't stop using it! I use it EVERYDAY and with patterns I already own (or designed). Once I started cutting fabric - I couldn't stop! The AccuQuilt GO! has made my quilting even faster, better, and more fun! Cutting is actually FUN! Plus, my favorite is NO more cutting/trimming half-square triangles - this is huge for me. We will chat more about this later. ;)

I love to use my fabric scraps from quilts - no fabric waste here! After I finished my latest Modern Triangles Quilt, I had some Juniper fabric scraps that I just couldn't just toss - I needed to make a bonus project. I love perfect half-square triangles so trimming is always necessary and it usually takes FOREVER until my AccuQuilt GO! came to the rescue!

I simply matched up my Juniper fabric (by Jen Allyson for Riley Blake Designs), right sides together, and placed them directly on the GO! Quarter Square Triangle - 4" Finished Square (die #3). You can stack up to six layers of fabrics, so it goes really quick! I didn't even need to trim my fabric scraps because the GO! dies are two-toned so you know exactly where to place your fabric - yet another timesaver!

I love that there is very little fabric waste and no pre-trimming required for scraps. I just kept placing the fabric on the die to cut more half-square triangles.

Seriously in just a few minutes (it took me longer to take the photos), I cut 64 half-square triangles (32 pairs). TIP: By placing your fabric pairs right sides together, they come off the die board ready to sew right away!

Check out the clever blunt edges - they are exactly ¼" so perfect seams and no more trimming fabric dog ears!

After a few minutes of sewing and pressing time, I had (32) perfect half-square triangles without having to trim... yay!

I was happily surprised just how quickly I was able to make both projects without needing to first cut my scraps to size and then trim the final half-square triangles. Luckily, Mother's Day is coming up as I'm going to need all the half-square triangle GO! dies. ;)

More Projects

Let's get back to sharing the projects I made with my AccuQuilt GO! What I love about these projects is that I used a "regular" pattern and my Accuquilt GO! dies to cut the fabric, which saved me time and gave me perfect blocks. I thought I was pretty good at rotary cutting, but guess what - AccuQuilt is more precise!

Starlight Double Mini Quilt

I just released my latest pattern, Starlight Double, and it was a happy coincidence that it is perfectly compatible for the GO! Qube 8" Mix and Match Block. You can cut the ENTIRE quilt with an AccuQuilt GO! Qube 8" Mix and Match Block except for one rectangle...yay! I thought my cutting was good BUT with the GO! this block came together so easily and with perfect points! I can't wait to make a full Starlight Double Quilt using my AccuQuilt GO! and GO! Qube. And just check out this happy fabric, Make Today Awesome by Helen Dardik for Clothworks.

Trip Around the World Block

My March Quilting Bee block was Trip Around the World which was perfect for the GO! Strip Cutter-2½" (2" Finished) die. I like to buy solid white yardage by the bolt and cut my own 2½" wide (jelly roll strips) as it is more cost effective. Sometimes my strips can get a bit wavy, but not with the AccuQuilt GO! and it was soooo fast and just look how well my points match! Yay!

Barn Block #12

Each month I sew my Sew Sampler Barn Block and this month I was able to use my GO! Qube 8" Mix and Match Block. It made sewing those tiny half-square triangles easier than ever.

I am just loving my new AccuQuilt GO! There are so many more projects that I can't wait to create! I think curved piecing is going to be a breeze and - can I say again - all those half-square triangles! For a full view of what came in my Ready. Set. GO!, check out my video:
