Hi, quilters! Raye here from The Homebody Company with a beginner block for the holiday season!
I have been all about the Christmas trees lately, and I am so excited to bring you a simple holiday tree block that you can make using your GO! Fabric Cutter and the GO! Qube Mix & Match 12" Block! If you don't have this Qube size, you can use these instructions to create the holiday tree block with the same shapes in any GO! Mix & Match Qube.
I am a big fan of scrappy quilts, partially because I love how easy they are to make and partially because I am trying to use fabric that I already have versus adding more to my overflowing collection. For this project, you can use any fabric scraps you'd like in any color (solids or prints).
Dies Needed:
- GO! Qube Mix & Match 12" Block
- GO! Square-6 1/2" (6" Finished) Die (Shape 1)
- GO! Square-3 1/2" (3" Finished) (Shape 2)
- GO! Half Square Triangle-6" Finished Square (Shape 3)
- GO! Half Square Triangle-3" Finished Square (Shape 5)
- GO! Rectangle-3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (3" x 6" Finished) (Shape 8)
Cuts to Make
For the tree shape, you will need:
- One 6 1/2” square
- Four 3 1/2” (3” finished) half square triangles (HSTs)
- Two 6 1/2” (6” finished) HSTs
For the background, you will need:
- Four 3 1/2” (3” finished) HSTs
- Two 6 1/2” (6” finished) HSTs
- Four 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangles
For the trunk, you will need:
- One 3 1/2” square
Layout the Block
The block layout is very simple and allows you to play with color throughout your tree if you went the scrappy route. The sizes of pieces laid out in rows are:
Row 1: background rectangle, two stacked 3 1/2” HSTs, 6 1/2” HST, background rectangle
Row 2: 6 1/2” HST, 1/2” square, two stacked 3 1/2” HSTs
Row 3: background rectangle, 3 1/2” square, background rectangle
Sew the HSTs
Start by sewing each HST and press the seams open. One of my favorite things about using GO! Dies is NO trimming for HSTs!
Putting Together Each Row
Now, sew together the pieces row by row. One my favorite methods here is to chain-piece and you’ll find it comes together so quickly!

Pressing
While not necessary, I do like to note a helpful pressing tip here! For row 3, I press all seams open. However, on rows 1 and 2, I make sure to alternate the direction in which I press so that the seams will nest and your tree will line up properly.
Finish the Block
To finish the block, sew together your rows, starting with rows 1 and 2. Once complete, press all the seams open.
Using Your Block
This block can easily be turned into a full quilt, pillow, wall hanging - the options are truly endless! With a finished size of a 14 1/2” square, with a few of these, you could have fun seasonal decorations made completely from your stash!
I hope that you create your own version of the scrappy holiday tree block. Be sure to use the hashtag #AccuQuiltBuilt and tag @thehomebodycompany and @AccuQuilt on social media, so we can see what you've created!
