Making Quilting Easy with the GO! Mix & Match Qubes

This is the first blog in a six-part series involving the GO! Qube Mix & Match and GO! Qube Companion Sets. Check back weekly for a new post! In this series we’ll cover the following six topics:

  1. Mixing & Matching with the GO! Mix & Match Qubes
  2. Our Best Companions – the GO! Qube Companion Sets
  3. BYOB (Build Your Own Blocks)
  4. How to use the Qubes to make 9-Patch Blocks
  5. How to put Blocks on Point
  6. Using the 6" and 12" Qubes together

As an engineer, I grew up with a love of Legos and K’nex. Because of this, I tend to think of the dies in the Qube sets as Legos. Basically, each die in the set is a different piece providing you the opportunity to build an endless number of quilt patches and quilt blocks.

Number System = Sewing Simplified

Each of the Mix & Match sets has eight dies in them that cut eight different shapes, which you can see below.

The beauty of each die is that you can use a quilt by number system because the shapes and numbers for all four Qube sizes are the same, but the shapes finished sizes are different. Each Qube allows you to make 72 quilt blocks in a 4-patch configuration. The Qubes make sewing easy, as the shapes have the dog ears built in, which will save you time in lining up pieces. Additionally, you won’t have any dog ears to clip!

When it comes to the Qubes, I find it useful to think of the shapes in relation to one another as opposed to the finished sizes of each individual shape. Let’s walk through each shape and how they relate to one another and the over size of the Qube.

Shape 1 is a finished size square that is half of the finished size of the Qube’s 4-patch block size. For example, shape 1 in the GO! Qube Mix & Match 8" Block is a 4" finished square. In the 6" Qube shape 1 is a 3" finished square.

Shape 2 is a square that has a finished size which is half that of the finished size of shape 1.

Shape-2

Shape 3 is a half square triangle (HST) resulting in a finished size that is the same as shape 1.

Shape-3

Shape 4 is a quarter square triangle (QST) creating a finished size that is the same as shape 1.

Shape-4

Shape 5 is an HST resulting in a finished size that is the same as shape 2.

Shape-5

Shape 6 is a square on point (SOP) that will match the finished size of shape 1 when paired with four shape 5s.

Shape-6

Shape 7 is a rectangle that will match the finished size of shape 8 when paired with two shape 5s.

Shape-7

Shape 8 is a rectangle which is half the finished height and width as the finished size of shape 1. Putting two shape 8s together will result in creating a square that matches shape 1.

What’s the Difference Between Qubes?

You’re probably wondering what the differences are between Qubes. Well, our goal is to offer Qubes that are easy to understand and use. Each Qube is labeled after the finished block size that you will be able to make using a 4-patch configuration.

The currently available sizes are 6", 8", 9", 12" and now with our latest launch of the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10" Block, 10" is also available!  These are great because you are able to choose your size based on your preferred style.

TIP:

If you don’t have a preferred style, or a new quilter and aren’t sure which Qube to start with, the GO! Qube Mix & Match 8" Block is always a great choice.
