AccuQuilt employees are allowed two hours per week of paid time to work on quilting projects in our state-of-the-art Dream Studio where they have their choice of fabric cutters, thread, and sewing and embroidery machines. The Dream Studio also includes must-have irons and ironing boards as well as a longarm machine—every quilter’s dream—so we can do our own quilting.
It's easy for employees to become avid quilters, since everything we could possibly want and need is at our fingertips, with the exception of fabric. (Although there is fabric available in the Dream Studio, it is for GO! and Studio 2 fabric cutter demonstrations.)
Sewing and quilting lessons are also taught by team members or a local quilt shop instructor. Classes typically consist of fabric die-cutting, rotary cutting, fabric and color theory, and sewing techniques. These classes are not just for employees who are beginner quilters, but for those who are more intermediate. Even the most talented quilters still need to brush up on their skills and learn other tips and techniques.
Employees are required to make a quilt soon after joining AccuQuilt, especially if their previous experience was limited. Making quilts allows employees to be better equipped to serve customers and to discuss basic quilting-related matters. Further, learning how to make a quilt from start to finish also gives immeasurable experience that employees wouldn’t otherwise get from manuals and books about quilting. The hands-on approach also puts everything in context for employees. For instance, employees must learn how to cut with a rotary cutter first before moving onto our innovative GO! or Studio 2 fabric cutters.
