Who Is Sharon Miner?

Sharon Miner is a Michigan native who has moved around her home state and now lives in Allen Park. She first got the quilting bug in 1982 when she took a hand piecing class. Since then, she’s completed over 75 quilts.

Her favorite quilters are Eleanor Burns, Linda Hahn, Stacy Michell, Sue Nickles and Jinny Beyer. Not one to play favorites, Sharon is a fan of traditional, modern, pieced and applique quilting.

Tumblers, Hexagons, Half Square Triangles and Squares in many sizes make up Sharon's favorite shapes. When she has spare time, Sharon Miner likes to read, cook and use her cutters to cut her own personal quilt kits.

Sharon had a successful 30-year career as a legal secretary before diving into the quilt educating world in the fall of 2012. That was when she was invited to join the AccuQuilt team in Houston for the International Quilt Festival to show the fabric cutters in the booth. She now travels as an educator with Accuquilt to shows through out the US giving quilting tips and advice.

Favorite Teaching Moments

Sharon Miner enjoys showing quilters how fast and accurate AccuQuilt products are. “The 2.5-inch strip is my favorite die to show as it shows them they can cut perfect strips without the bend at the fold, by having the fabric going into the cuter fold first,” she said

She’s also always delighted to let quilters know how much fabric they can save by using AccuQuilt products as opposed to rotary cutting.

One of Sharon’s favorite things about AccuQuilt products is the accuracy of cutting, plus the dog-eared corners and notches that enable perfect piecing. “I love how easy the cutters are to use and the amount of time that I save,” Sharon said.

Quilting Tips for New Quilters and New Go! Cutter Users

Sharon suggests that any new quilter have a basic sewing machine with a quarter inch foot and a GO! system for cutting. “I explain that having a sewing machine with a quarter inch foot is great; however, if your cut pieces are not cut correctly, your blocks will not come out to the correct size,” Sharon explains.

For new quilters, Sharon's quilting tips suggests starting with scrap fabrics to create simple 4-patch or 9-patch type blocks. This is because the seams are easy to master and it gives the quilter confidence.

Quilters new to AccuQuilt products are excited and some times over whelmed. Sharon suggests starting out simple with purchases that they will use the most. She advises that they read the manual and project booklet first. Then start out with the patterns in the project booklet using scrap fabric to get used to their new cutter.

“I stress that when cutting geometric shapes, the length of the grain is placed over the angled blades going through the cutter and show them an example of how to test their fabric,” Sharon said.

Sharon recommends a 2.5-inch strip cutter and a GO! Qube so quilters can cut their own Jelly Rolls™, bindings and sashings to create countless block patterns and build confidence.

5 Quilting Tips from a Quilt Educat

  • Browse AccuQuilt catalogues for inspiration and ideas
  • Miter strips for borders and bindings using a half square triangle
  • Many dies can be used for multiple purposes
  • Use 2 dies together to create different patterns
  • Think outside the die

“Dies like Local Color give you other options as well – a half of an apple core, a different size orange peel and a crown. The Flowering Snow ball die can give you a large orange peel by folding your fabric just below the straight blade of the shape that resembles a half orange peel,” Sharon said.

If Sharon had a wish for the quilting industry, it would be to see more local quilt shops and fewer big box discount stores.

“Local quilt shops provide us with quality quilting fabrics and education that quilters rarely find in big box stores.”
