Earlier this fall, we introduced the Island Batik Ambassador team to BOB® (Block on Board®) and the designs they created were amazing! The quilters were challenged with the theme Child's Play and were asked to let their inner child to come out and play. Whimsy, color and playful spirit were encouraged and AccuQuilt BOBs were invited.
Just as the name suggests, Blocks on Board or BOB dies have all the shapes you need to make an entire quilt block all on one board. That includes the quarter inch seam allowance and eliminates the dog ears and the need for trimming. Each Island Batik Ambassador was given a BOB die to build their design around. All the designs were so creative and we wanted to share some of them with you!
Fluttering Bear's Paw
Geraldine Wilkins of Living Water Quilter highlighted the "toes" of the GO! Bear's Paw-14" Finished die (55461) with a white backdrop to completely rethink the look of the classic Bear's Paw block. With an added sashing between pastel blocks, dramatic black accents and a cute butterfly appliqué, you've got a quilt that any young girl, tween or teenager would love.
Wish Upon Cleopatra's Fan
Clever Chameleon's Dione Gardner-Stephen created a dreamy dandelion quilt. Dione used the unique diamonds and curved triangles of the GO! Cleopatra's Fan-12" Finished die (55490) to mimic the feather-y tops of a dandelion. She appliquéd those pieces onto a scrappy patchwork and alongside a leafy stem.
Geometric Spider Web
Kaleidoscopes is a toy that can inspire and intrigue people of any age, which makes Tish Stemple's Pickle's Kaleidoscope quilt pattern perfect for the challenge. Tish used the GO! Spider Web-6" Finished die (55487) and plain white squares for a modern geometric mandala. Her clever color placement brings out another pattern within the overall quilt and almost emulates an on point block.
Cleo's Kaleidoscope
Again, kaleidoscopes can be so inspiring and it certainly shows. PamelaQuilts also created a beautiful mandala-esque pattern but this time using the GO! Cleopatra's Fan-12" Finished die (55490). The black background and accents allow the curvy shapes of the regal and intricate Cleopatra's Fan block to shine. It's almost unrecognizable! Check out her post to see some of the other ways she arranged this pattern on her design wall before she decided on the final look!
Ohio Stars & Exploding Hearts
There is something magical about a child's view of the world. They tend to see things that adults who live with years of structure and rules miss. Laura Piland's Exploding Hearts quilt pattern honors that out of the box creativity perfectly. When she received the GO! Ohio Star-12" Finished die (55174), she knew she had a challenge. How would she make this block into one fit for a kid? After playing with the shapes in EQ8, she came up with this lovely heart. Teals, pinks and purples make the design pop.
Cleo's Hot Air Balloon Ride
Suzy Webster, Island Batik Ambassador and GO! Getter, was inspired by an image of a hot air balloon and created what she saw with fabric. The natural curve created by the GO! Cleopatra's Fan-12" Finished die (55490) block gives the balloon an appearance of inflated and soaring through a blue sky. After it was completed, it was kid-tested and approved by her son!
