Pucker up – it’s pickle time! AccuQuilt’s June Die to Try Die of the Month is a Block on Board (BOB) to make the popular and classic block, the Pickle Dish! This block has been around for over 150 years, probably even before the Double Wedding Ring design first hit the quilting scene. The Pickle Dish appears to have been popular in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, with a pattern first published by the Kansas City Star in 1931.
So, what makes this block so special and how did it get such a unique name? It’s a complex block with a combination of straight and curved seams that is often made with foundation paper piecing to achieve all the perfect points. Perhaps the name comes from those points that mimic the cut glass edge of many pickle dishes, or from the pointed oval shape of the dish?
However the name originated, the GO! Pickle Dish is going to make creating these blocks quicker and easier than ever before. As a BOB die, all the pieces for a block are on just 1 die board. The specially engineered corners and notches plus easy to follow directions will put this block within the grasp of any quilter who can sew a ¼” seam. The multiple pieces needed to create this block will cut accurately every time, and screen printed letters on the die will help you keep those pieces in order. Here’s a video all about this new die.
Just because this is a classic block, it can be made to look modern and new depending on your overall quilt design and fabric selections.
The GO! Pennant Mania Throw Quilt is certainly a fresh take on this traditional block. The bright solid colors pop against the black and white, and that theme carries over to the fun border treatment that’s created with the Triangle in a Square Center from the GO! Qube Companion Set-Angles 6”.
Another modern look for this block is found in the GO! Pickled Greens Throw Quilt. The green fabrics are a fun play on “pickles” with the blues providing such a sense of movement to the background that might even transport you to the ocean!
The GO! Plum Pickle Dish Throw Quilt provides a softer look at this traditional block, but still with a modern edge. The classic layout of the blocks would work well in so many different fabrics – think about using Civil War prints or 30’s reproduction fabrics for a totally different look. You can audition different looks for free using AccuQuilt’s GO! Quilt design program at AccuQuilt.com.
If you’re nervous about getting started, check out this GO! Burst of Sunshine Throw Quilt. This project only requires 4 of the Pickle Dish blocks, set off beautifully by shapes found in the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10” Block and matching GO! Qube Companion Set-Angles 10”.
You’ll have the GO! Pickle Dish Table Runner done with time to spare before the county fair! This runner turns the classic block on point for a fun, bold look to enhance any table setting. Setting the blocks on point is a snap with the GO! Setting Triangles die in the 10” size.
