Make a One of a Kind Bear's Paw Design With a Block-On-Board Die

Oct 30, 2018, 8:30:00 AM / by Mona Phelps

Hi, this is Mona Phelps from Kentucky Whittaker Creations. I’m sharing a wonderful Block on Board® (BOB®) die – with the traditional Bears Paw design!

I am one of those people who shy away from more intricate designs because I'm not a fan of cutting small pieces. Along with this die, many of the dies found on AccuQuilt.com have opened a whole new world to my repertoire. This die allows for precise cutting and takes out all of the guesswork.

The GO! Bear's Paw-14" Finished die includes two different sized squares - a rectangle and triangle for half-square triangles. It also includes instructions on how to cut your fabric to make a two-tone bear paw that is finished at 14”, which is the perfect size for a pillow! I've found that combining several results in a great throw quilt. Using this BOB, you’ll be able to complete a quilt in no time at all.

I decided to do something a little different with this die. I love quilts with the blocks on point, so I thought I would give this a try. Introducing the Bear's Paw Squared pattern.

Fabric Requirements:

  • Fabric A – 1¼ yards (black)
  • Fabric B – ⅞ yard (white)
  • Fabric C – 1½ yards (red)

Using your Bear’s Paw BOB, cut the following:

Fabric A

  • 21 small squares
  • 64 triangles

Fabric B

  • 20 rectangles

Fabric C

  • 4 large squares
  • 64 triangles

You’ll also need to cut the following:

Fabric A

  • Four blocks 6.5 x 5.5”
  • Four right triangles 10 x 10” (the third side will be approx. 14.25”)
  • Four triangles 14 x 14” (the third side will be approx. 20”)

Fabric B

  • Two strips 3.5 x 40.5”
  • Two strips 3.5 x 46.25”

Fabric C

  • Two strips 4.5 x 46.25”
  • Two strips 4.5 x 54.25”

Bear’s Paw Block Assembly

Please note that all seams are ¼".

Unit 1:

Sew one triangle of fabric A to one triangle of fabric C to make a half-square triangle (HST).

Sew together two HST’s.

Unit 2:

Now, sew one triangle of fabric C to one triangle of fabric A to make an HST.

Sew together two HST’s.

Unit 3:

Sew Unit 1 to the small square below.

Unit 4:

Sew Unit 2 to the large square below.

Unit 5:

Sew Unit 3 to Unit 4.

You will need to make sixteen (16) Unit 5 blocks.

Unit 6:

Now, you'll make the full Bear’s Paw block.

Combine four (4) Unit 5 blocks with four (4) rectangles and one (1) small square as per the picture below:

These blocks should be trimmed to 14½”.

You will need to make four (4) Unit 6 blocks.

Center Block Assembly

Sew together your center block using four (4) 6½” squares, one (1) small square), and four (4) rectangles as below:

Trim this block to 14½”.

Final assembly

Now, you are ready to assemble your quilt.

Sew your blocks together, along with the triangles, as per the drawing below:

Finally, attach the borders, white first, and then red.

Here is my finished quilt top (approx. 49" square):
