Music To My Ears Quilt Tutorial

Dec 10, 2018, 8:00:00 AM / by Bea Lee

Hi, it's Bea from Beaquilter.comI'm here to show you how to make this cool, modern music quilt with the GO! QUBE Mix & Match 12" Block and the GO! Music Medley die!

Quilt measures 51" x 51"

Fabrics used to make this quilt:

White 2 3/4 yds

Grey 1/4 yd

Black 3/4 yds

Binding fabric (I used black) 1/2 yd

Fusible (like Steam-A-Seam Lite 2) for appliqué shapes, and I used the matching embroidery files as well.

Batting 55" x 55"

Backing 58" x 58"

I used these dies:

GO! QUBE Mix & Match 12" Block

GO! Music Medley die

GO! Strip Cutter-1", 1 1/2", 2"

GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2" for the binding

Then I started cutting!

In white I cut out (9) of shape 1 (6 1/2" squares), (28) of shape 2 (3 1/2" squares), (16) of shape 3 (6" finished HSTs), (20) of shape 5 (3" finished HSTs), (44) of shape 8 (3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles), and (4) 2" WOF strips with the strip die.

From the grey fabric, I cut (20) of shape 5 (3" finished HSTs).

From the black fabric, I cut (28) of shape 2 (3" finished squares) and (16) of shape 3 (6" HSTs).

I prepped some black scraps with Warm's Steam-A-Seam Lite 2, then laid them on the Music Medley die and cut out 5 music notes.

Then, I prepped the 6 1/2" squares for embroidery, hooped them and machine embroidered 5 blocks.

Time to sew! I sewed the grey and white small (shape 5) triangles together.

The block is a bit different than traditional blocks. The HSTs go in a pinwheel sort of direction around the center squares with rectangles (shape 8) in between like this.

There are 5 of these blocks.

The black and white large pinwheel blocks are easy to make from the large HSTs, just make sure they "spin" the same way. There are 4 of these blocks.

Sew these together into the center of the quilt like this!

Add the inner 2" border pieces.

The outer border is a piano key border (clever right??). It's easily made with the small shape 2 squares and shape 8 rectangles.

There are also large shape 1 squares in the corners.

Here is the top all put together.

I quilted it with a pointy swirl all over, avoiding the music notes.

Last, I added the black binding.

A fun and pretty easy quilt to make!

Of course you could make it smaller with one of the other Qube sets, the appliqué just might not fit as perfectly, or you could use something different. Remember the inner border should finish at half the finished size of shape 2 squares, so with the 12" Qube set, the shape 2 square finishes at 3" and the inner borders were cut 2" and finish at 1 1/2".

Have fun!
