Setting Triangles: A New Point of View for Your Quilts

On Point Setting Triangle Release

Are you ready to look at your quilts from a new point of view? Setting quilt blocks on point is a great way to change the look of even the most basic blocks. You can bring new and exciting secondary patterns into play, but the key to this design choice is finishing the edges off correctly!

Here's a look at some blocks set on point in the GO! Stars in the Crown Quilt (PQ11861)

How hard can that be? The design looks like standard triangles that go on the corners and around the edges to fill the spaces between blocks, right? Well, it’s all about the lengthwise grain of your fabric.

If you simply take a square of fabric and cut it half from corner to corner, the exposed or outside edge of your quilt will have the bias on the outside. This will cause that outside edge to be stretchy and unstable - distorting your final project.  Check out this video for more information, and a tutorial on this great quilt!

In the past, quilters have gotten around this problem with the use of complicated mathematical equations and rotary cutting - something that stopped many a quilter in their tracks. Now, AccuQuilt has made setting blocks on point a breeze with the introduction of dies designed to cut these shapes quickly and accurately.

May Setting Triangle Dies

GO! Setting Triangle Dies are available in six sizes that match up with the GO! Qube finished block sizes – 4”, 6”, 8”, 9”, 10” and 12”. These sizes will also pair up with GO! BOB, or Block on Board, dies to open up all the quilting possibilities you can dream up.

When you first look at these dies, remember one of the basic cutting rules to using GO! dies: Have your lengthwise grain running parallel to the lengthwise blades as the die goes through the cutter. Doing this will give you the tight grain on the outside of your quilt, both for the corner triangles and the side triangles.

No math. That’s all there is to it! Each GO! Setting Triangle Die will include at least one corner triangle and 1 side triangle on the same die. You’ll have both cut in no time and you'll be ready to put together a beautiful, on point quilt!
