It’s Groundhog Day! Charismatic Punxsutawney Phil will be taking to a Pennsylvanian podium (or has depending on when you're reading this) to predict the coming of spring. While founded in ancient practices, the first known observation of Groundhog Day was recorded in 1886 by the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. Though that was quite some time ago, you might be surprised to find that another tradition associated with Pennsylvania began taking shape right around the same time that ol' Phil made his shadow viewing escapades official.
