Trendy Notebook Cover Using the GO! Me

 Hi, it's Carolyn Beam. I'm excited to share this stylish notebook cover that I made using the GO! Me. Clever arrangements of the shapes from the GO! Me Owl 55333 and GO! Me Owl Accessories 55675 (included with the GO! Me) create fun flowers to decorate the cover.

Supplies Needed:

GO! Me Owl 55333

GO! Me Owl Accessories 55675 (included with the GO! Me)

GO! Strip Cutter-4" (3 1/2" finished) 55085

GO! Strip Cutter-4 1/2" (4" finished) 55054

GO! Square-2" (1 1/2" finished) 55022

GO! Strip Cutter-5 1/2" (5" finished) 55026

Fabric scraps for the appliqué (stripe for vase, green for stems and leaves, orange, teal and yellow for flowers)

1/2 yard of light teal

Fat eighth or scrap each of orange print and yellow print

1/4 yard of white print

16" x 11" piece for lining

20" x 15" piece of muslin

20" x 15" piece of batting

1/2 yard of fusible web

1 yard (3/4" or 1"-wide coordinating grosgrain ribbon (cut into 2—18" lengths)

Composition Notebook/Journal (7 1/2" x 9 3/4") (available where office supplies are sold)

 

Precut as follows:

Note: Apply fusible web to the wrong side of asterisked fabrics following manufacturer's instructions before cutting appliqué shapes.

*Stripe: Precut 2—4 1/2" x 5" rectangles, cut 2 owl bodies

*Green: Precut 4—1 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles, cut 4 stems

*Green: Precut 14—1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles, cut 14 leaves

*Orange: Precut 8—1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles, cut 8 leaves

*Orange: Precut 2—1 3/4" x 1 3/4" squares, cut 2 circles (1 7/16")

*Teal: Precut 4—2 1/4" x 2 1/4" squares, cut 4 flowers

*Teal: Precut 2—1" squares, cut 2 circles (1/2")

*Yellow: Precut 8—1 1/2" x 1 3/4" rectangles, cut 8 owl feet

*Yellow: Precut 2—1" squares, cut 2 circles (1/2")

Light Teal Print: Precut 1—3 1/2" x WOF strip, cut 1—18" strip

Light Teal Print: Precut 1—4 1/2" x WOF strip, cut 2—11" strips

Light Teal Print: Precut 2—6 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles, cut 12—2" squares

Orange Print: Precut 2—6 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles, cut 12—2" squares

Yellow Print: Precut 2—6 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles, cut 12—2" squares

White Print: Precut 1—5 1/2" x WOF strip, cut 1—18" strip

 

Sewing Directions:

1. Lay out teal, orange and yellow 2" squares to form a four-patch block as shown (there are extra squares so you can play with the arrangement).

2. Pin and sew two rows. Press seams in alternating directions for each row.

3. Lay out, pin, and sew six four patch blocks into one row unit. Press seams in one direction.

4. Lay out one white 5 1/2" x 18" strip, the four patch block unit, and one teal 3 1/2" x 18" strip.

 

5. Pin and sew the three row units together. Press seams toward added rows.

 

6. Measure 1/2" above the indent between the owl body and head and trim to form the flower bases.

7. Cut two of the stems in half. Fuse and machine appliqué the flowers, stems, leaves and vases in place as shown, keeping in mind that you will be trimming the unit to 16" x 11".

8. Layer batting between pieced unit and muslin. Pin or baste layers together. Quilt as desired by machine or hand.

 

9. Trim unit to 16" x 11".

10. With the quilted unit right side up, place one coordinating 18" length of ribbon in the center of each short side of the quilt unit. Baste each ribbon length in place, stitching 1/8" from the edge of the quilted unit.

 

11. With the quilted unit right side up, place one coordinating 18" length of ribbon in the center of each short side of the quilt unit. Baste each ribbon length in place, stitching 1/8" from the edge of the quilted unit.

12. With the quilted unit right side up, place one pressed inside flap on the left side of the quilted unit, matching raw edges. Baste in place, stitching 1/8" from the edge. Repeat for right side.

13. With the quilted unit right side up, place the lining fabric on top, right sides together. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on all four sides, leaving an opening in the center bottom for turning.

14. Clip corners and turn right side out. Turn flaps to lining side. Press. Slip-stitch the opening left for turning closed.

 

15. Insert composition notebook/journal into flaps and tie closed with ribbon. Trim ribbon to desired lengths.
