"An Umbrella for Two" Table Runner - A Quilting Tutorial

Apr 27, 2016 9:00:00 AM / by Belinda Karls-Nace

Greetings quilty friends – it’s Belinda from Blue Ribbon Designs, and I'm returning today with a brand new quilting tutorial featuring the GO! Qube. If we haven’t met before, I'm a quilting and needlework designer, creator, finisher, and teacher (and the author of the Samplings from a Blue Ribbon Girl blog). I enjoy using my AccuQuilt Fabric Cutters on a daily basis and love to share my enthusiasm and projects with others!

Today, I am here to share my latest GO! Qube project with you - my “An Umbrella for Two” table runner. This bright and cheerful table runner features a traditional quilt block in the center and two pieced blocks with machine appliqué on either end.

This quilted project features the GO! Qube Mix & Match 12” Block for the traditional pieced blocks, along with GO! Dancing Umbrella by Edyta Sitar and GO! Birds to create the spring rain appliqué.

Here in my home state of Iowa, April always brings rain showers (and hopefully May flowers), so I thought the umbrella and raindrops would be perfect for my project this month. Using the GO! Qube Mix & Match 12” Block made this table runner project quick and easy! You will also want to have a GO! Qube 12” Block-72 Block Patterns Booklet handy – this FREE downloadable pattern booklet for the GO! Qube 12” will give you detailed instructions for piecing the two quilt blocks featured in this project. So go pick out some fun, springtime fabrics and let’s get started…

Assembly:

  1. Lay out four assorted white print/solid shape 1, to create a GO! 4-Patch 12” Block (reference the GO! Qube 12” Block-72 Block Patterns Booklet for block sewing instructions). Make two quilt blocks.

  1. Lay out two red solid shape 4, two green print shape 4, four yellow print shape 5, four blue print shape 6, and one multi-color print shape 6 to create a GO! Broken Sash 12” Block (reference the GO! Qube 12” Block-72 Block Patterns Booklet for block sewing instructions). Make one quilt block.

  1. Lay out one dark blue print bird with pointed tail, one yellow print bird with rounded tail, one dark yellow wing, six blue wings, one red umbrella canopy, one multi-color umbrella accent, one gray print umbrella handle, one gray print umbrella cap, one light green solid rectangle and one green print rectangle on one white 4-patch block using the diagram below as a guide.

  1. Once you are happy with your layout, fuse and machine appliqué all pieces in place. Use your favorite method for the bird eyes – I hand stitched French Knots using one strand of size #5 pearl cotton. Make two blocks.

  2. Layout the 3 pieced/machine appliqué blocks using the diagram below as a reference.

  1. Pin and sew the three blocks into one row to form the table runner.
  2. Layer batting between quilt top and backing.
  3. Pin or baste layers together.
  4. Quilt as desired.
  5. Add multi-color print binding, mitering corners.
