Hello! I'm Sherri McConnell from A Quilting Life, and with spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to use your GO! Qube Mix & Match 12" Block Set to make some bright placemats for your table. By using the GO! Qube set this can be an afternoon project!

Supplies:

GO! Big Electric Fabric Cutter

GO! Qube-12" Mix & Match Block Set

(Use these three dies from the Qube: Half-Square Triangle-6" Finished Square (55001), the Square 3 1/2" (3" Finished) (55701), and the Half Square Triangle - 3" Finished Square (55703).)

You will also need the following fabrics for each placemat:

  • 1/4 yard dark/medium fabric for large half-square triangles and squares
  • 1/4 yard light fabric for large half-square triangles
  • 1/8 yard each of two fabrics for the small half-square triangles
  • 2 strips 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" for placemat borders
  • 16" x 20" batting
  • 16" x 20 " backing
  • 2 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding

Cut out all of the pieces using the GO! Qube.

Next, make the large and small half-square triangle units. Match up the light and dark small and large half-square triangle units and sew together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams on the half-square triangle units open. Because of the notched edges there won't be any trimming to do!

Lay out all of the pieces according to the GO! Old Maid's Puzzle Pattern included with the set. This block design reminds me of butterflies ... perfect for spring! Now you are ready to sew the small half-square triangle units together with the squares.

Sew the cut squares to the small half-square triangle units as shown in the diagram. Press toward the squares.

Sew the upper and lower sections together to create the half-square triangle / square units. Be sure to "nest" the seams from the upper and lower units by making sure the seams are right up against one another. This will allow the corners of the blocks to meet in the middle. Make two.

Now sew one of the units from the previous step to a large half-square triangle unit. Make sure to sew them together according to the diagram. Repeat to sew the other unit from the step above to the remaining large half-square triangle unit.

Press toward the large half-square triangle units.

Now sew the upper and lower units together, matching the center seams.

The center unit of the placemat is finished. The block should now measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2". Next add the 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" side strips to the left and right sides of the finished block. Press out toward the side strips.

Now layer the 16" x 20 placemat backing fabric, the 16" x 20" batting, and the completed placemat top. Quilt as desired. I quilted my placemats using my walking foot and a straight stitch with the quilting lines about 1/2" apart. I also lengthened the stitch to 3.5, so the stitches would be more spaced. The simple straight line quilting really accentuated the design of the block; however, curves or stipples would be a fun choice of quilting design as well.

Now that you know how quick and easy these placemats are with the GO! Qube dies, make some more for your spring table setting. Enjoy!
