How to Make This Great Elephants and Bowties Table Topper

Hi, it's me Bea again from Beaquilter. I'm here to show you how I made this cute elephants and bowties table topper.

It measures 19" x 31".

Here's what's needed to make the table topper:

Dies and Supplies:

Shape #2 from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 12" Block (3" finished square)

GO! Bowtie Set-6" Finished

GO! Elephants die and stabilizer

Strip cutter 2" (1½" Finished) and 2½" (2" Finished)

If you're machine embroidering the elephants like I did, you'll also need the accompanying embroidery file, stabilizer and embroidery threads, etc. - standard supplies for machine embroidery. :)

Fabric:

This table topper is made with "Le pavot" fabrics by Moda.

Beige–¼ yard

Small pink/lobster floral–¼ yard

Large pink/lobster floral–¼ yard

Pink/lobster–¼ yard or scraps (elephants)

Light teal–¼ yard

Teal–¼ yard

Batting 23" x 35"

Backing–¾ yard

Binding–¼ yard (3 strips)

With the beige, I cut out 16 background bowtie shapes. Then, with the small pink and light teal, I cut out 8 each of the #2 square shape. With the small pink and light teal, I cut 8 each of the tiny bowtie triangle.

Then I sewed the small triangles to the beige backgrounds.

Then sewed bowties together (4 of each),

and sewed these into 2 larger blocks like this. They are now 12½" blocks.

Next, I got out the elephant die and prepped fabrics for cutting (adding stabilizer to the back of each BEFORE cutting out).

Then, I cut out 2 sets, 1 in REVERSE!

Since I machine embroidered the elephants onto the blocks, I ironed one fusible stabilizer onto the back of the 2 blocks. Notice all the seams are ironed OPEN!

Then, I centered it onto the hoop by using the grid insert that comes with the hoop, and it was easy to double check that it was straight with the seams in the block!

Next, I machine embroidered the 2 elephants in the blocks–one facing the other way. They are just ADORABLE!

Then, I sewed the 2 blocks together with the elephants facing each other.

Then, I added borders.

Teal uses the 2" Strip Die (1½" Finished). Two strips are 24½" and the sides are 15½".

The outer border is the large floral and it's cut with the 2½" Strip Die (2" Finished). Two strips are 27½" and the sides are 19½".

I quilted a leaf vine on the outer border and a loopy design on the inner border and curves from corner to corner on the bowties, and I left the elephants alone. ;)

The binding is made from 3 WOF strips.

It was such a fast and fun table topper to make, I hope you try it, too!

Note: You can easily make more blocks and create a baby quilt. Even just doubling the blocks (½ yard each approx.) would be 31" x 31".
